A Dream About Thyme, God's Creation, and the Wisdom to Discern
A personal reflection from December 2019, just before a new and uncertain year.
In December 2019, after hearing early reports of a concerning illness in China, I brought my questions and concerns for people to God. I asked Him to give me the best answer for what was happening. That same night, I had a dream that stayed with me.
I saw a wooden floor and a large pot of water steaming away. Ants walked in rows from the floor and into the pot. Then, in the steam, I saw one word spelled out: thyme.
I woke up wondering why that word had appeared so clearly. I knew thyme as an herb, but I had never given much thought to its value. As I began to research it, I found myself thinking about how God can use an ordinary thing—a plant in a garden, a word in a dream, a question that sends us searching—to invite us into greater attention and care.
When COVID-19 arrived not long afterward, the dream took on deeper meaning for me. I believe God answered my prayer in a way that drew my attention to thyme and to His creation. I hold that as a personal faith reflection and an invitation toward prayerful discernment.
SCRIPTURE AND SPIRITUAL REFLECTION
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV
For me, this is the heart of the story. Wisdom is bringing our questions to God, staying humble about what we do not know, and being willing to learn.
Genesis 1:29 reminds us that God gave seed-bearing plants and trees for food. I receive that as an invitation to gratitude for creation: food, herbs, beauty, and nourishment.
WHAT CLINICAL RESEARCH HAS SHOWN
Thyme is a flavorful culinary herb. Clinical research has explored specific combination products containing thyme with herbs such as ivy or primrose for cough symptoms in uncomplicated acute bronchitis. In a placebo-controlled trial of 361 adults, a fixed thyme-ivy syrup was associated with a greater reduction in coughing fits and earlier improvement in bronchitis symptoms. A separate placebo-controlled study found that a thyme-primrose combination supported improvement in acute-bronchitis symptoms.
Emerging research: A 2025 open-label pilot study of 21 adults with mild COVID-19 compared a thyme-ivy syrup with no medication and reported differences in several immune-response markers. Its authors recommended a larger confirmatory study.
CREATION, GRATITUDE, AND WISE CARE
I believe God’s creation is rich with nourishment and wonder. A pot of thyme growing on a windowsill can be a beautiful reminder to slow down, prepare a nourishing meal, breathe in gratitude, and pay attention to the small gifts woven through everyday life.
My takeaway from the dream is this: let curiosity lead us to responsible learning, prayer lead us to peace, and wisdom lead us to the right kind of help.
GENTLE WAYS TO ENJOY THYME
• Use culinary thyme in soups, roasted vegetables, beans, eggs, or tea as a flavor you enjoy.
• Let preparing food become a moment of prayer, gratitude, or quiet reflection.
• Choose regular meals, hydration, sleep, and fresh air as appropriate for your health and circumstances.
• If you are considering a thyme supplement, extract, or essential oil, speak with a pharmacist or clinician first—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a chronic illness, or taking medicines.
WHEN BREATHING NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION
For trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips or face, confusion, dehydration, or a respiratory illness that is severe or worsening, seek urgent medical care. Contact a healthcare professional for guidance about COVID-19 testing and treatment options, particularly if you are at higher risk of severe illness.
A PRAYERFUL CLOSE
I am still grateful for that dream: the wooden floor, the steaming pot, the orderly rows of ants, and that small word—thyme—appearing in the mist. I hold it as a personal invitation to notice God’s creation and to ask for wisdom.
May we be people who receive God’s gifts with gratitude, test health claims with care, and seek help without shame. Faith and good medical care can meet in the same faithful response: prayerful, grounded, and wise.
